PALS PLUS CATALOG AND METADATA SERVICES LIBRARIAN PALS Plus, a consortium of libraries in Passaic and Essex Counties, New Jersey, is looking for qualified candidates for the fulltime position of Catalog and Metadata Services Librarian to manage all aspects of cataloging, authority control and metadata for the consortium’s member libraries. PALS Plus, Inc. comprises 17 public libraries and 1 academic library, with a 7-member Executive Board. Office and network facilities are located in the Clifton Public Library. A staff of 5 administers the consortium’s programs and services, which include an Internet network, shared SirsiDynix integrated library system, a computer management system for the libraries’ public computers, and several group purchase programs. PALS Plus also coordinates multiple resource sharing programs among its members and with other consortia. The Catalog and Metadata Services Librarian reports to the Executive Director. Responsibilities include working with the consortium’s Technical Services Committee to develop effective policies for the consortial environment, coordinating the creation, acquisition, update and removal of metadata records for the consortium’s database, acting as expert consultant to member libraries, doing original or complex copy cataloging as needed, and acting as liaison to vendors and providers of bibliographic and metadata services. An MLS from an ALA-accredited school is required. Spring 2009 graduates will be considered for the position. Other requirements include a willingness to work in an environment of collaboration and consensus building, familiarity with current library cataloging standards relevant to public and academic libraries, knowledge of contemporary metadata applications in libraries, and experience with a major integrated library system. Some training and project management skills are also necessary. Salary meets the NJLA minimum, and the position offers generous benefits.
